Cosplay: Lord Varys
I miss Sunday Game of Thrones nights! I have photographed many amazing cosplays from the series except Lord Varys. I was thrilled when I found this striking Lord Varys Cosplay at Rhode Island Comic Con.
Cosplay: Xena Warrior Princess
I love the unique cosplays that I find while attending various conventions in different states. Who would have thought of Xena?! I photographed this amazing Xena Warrior Princess Cosplay at Rhode Island Comic Con. Now if I could just find a Hercules!
Cosplay: Sansa Stark
I photographed this Sansa Stark Cosplay at Rhode Island Comic Con. I am in constant awe by the amount of work put into the cosplays that I have the good fortune photograph. This one took one hundred and sixty hours, not including the crown and armor.
I always wanted those who view my cosplay photos to understand how much work goes into them. Thankfully, Amanda (photographed here) shared some insight into what it took to make this cosplay:
I made the pattern for the dress by myself, made two mockups, and then went on to make the dress using a fabric from spoonflower. I then embroidered on organza 20 intricate weird wood leaves, two direwolves for the sleeves that I never attached as well as vines for the collar.
The “armor” that I made is made from EVA foam cut by a ladder cutter, worbla, and aluminum wiring. The crown is made from a 3D printer and worbla.
It is unbelievable how multi-talented cosplayers are melding traditions such as sewing with modern day 3D-printing and more. I am very thankful for those who put in this amount of work so I can have the honor of photographing them.
Cosplay: Odin
I photographed my first Odin From Thor Cosplay at Rhode Island Comic Con. Rhode Island Comic Con was one of my favorite conventions for photographing cosplayers. They had a wonderful variety of characters. I used a cloud background here from Denny Manufacturing, it is so versatile. Normally we gel this background with every possible color imaginable but this is it in its original form.
Cosplay: Raven
I love this casual, witch Raven Cosplay that I photographed at Rhode Island Comic Con. It was an adorable full length cosplay (with amazing boots!!) but this ended up being my favorite photograph of the shoot. Although I try to highlight the full cosplay as often as I can, this happened to be one of those times where the pose and lighting came together. I sure hope our paths meet again!
Cosplay: Loki
Golden Ticket Update: This Golden Ticket Cosplay has been selected to be included in the FotoNostrum Cosplay 50 Exhibition in Barcelona from May 23 – July 31, 2024!
Anyone who has been to a comic convention within the last year could tell you that there are hundreds of people Cosplaying Loki at every convention. The props, movie quotes and the all around way that Steve (photographed here) carries himself as the Loki character is by far one of my favorites.
FotoNostrum Exhibition
This Golden Ticket Cosplay has been selected to be included in the FotoNostrum Cosplay 50 show in Barcelona from May 23 - July 31, 2024.
Cosplay: Dr. Strange
Rarely do I photograph the same cosplay twice. In order for me to photograph one again there has to be a twist to it, something exceptional about the cosplay or the person in it and I challenge myself to do something completely different lighting wise. Please check out Brandon The Shape Shifter on Facebook and Instagram. Brandon was amazing in every way; he’s one of those people with an unforgettably fun, kind and sweet personality. However when the camera clicked he posed like no one I have ever seen before! He had a jaw-dropping fierceness that can’t be compared, and on top of all that his cosplay was stunning as well.
I thought I would share some of the lighting thought process on this one (I use mainly Profoto B1’s and B1x’s). I used a 1′ X 4′ strip light with a grid on it at low power angled down on the backdrop. I placed a gridded light (probably a 10° or 20°) next to it at a higher power aiming behind the head, to give more separation between the subject and the background. I used another light with a grid on the face as I wanted to be able to control the light hitting the cosplay and face separately. Next, I used a gridded 2 ft. Octabox (Profoto B2) on the ground pointing up to light the bottom area of the cosplay and Cloak of Levitation. The Spell Disc glowed a glorious orange but the lights killed the glow, so we added a light behind the disc with a 5° grid and orange gel to recreate it. Then it was time to make the Cloak move! It was a little warm in our room so we tried cooling Brandon off with our leaf blower and hoped it would magically move the cloak to perfection. Unfortunately, the Cloak kept getting either spill from our orange-gelled light or blocking the orange, so it missed the disc. I had one assistant hold the cloak in a good position while another leaf blew the interior to add some dimension and shadow. One more assistant held the other side of the cloak and used a wave like motion to create movement on the other side. What would I do without my awesome assistants?
Cosplay: Evil Red Genie
How incredible is this Evil Red Genie Cosplay? I photographed the truly magnificent Brandon the Shapeshifter on Facebook and brandontheshapeshifter on Instagram at Rhode Island Comic Con. If you do not follow either of these pages, please check them out, so unbelievable!
Cosplay: Arwen
I have photographed the very talented Casterly_Fox on Instagram and Jaclyn Nicole on Facebook in three different states and over five different cosplays.
This Arwen from Lord of the Rings cosplay was photographed at Rhode Island Comic Con.
