I noticed this amazing Cosplayer in the final hours of the convention in Phoenix working with another photographer. I knew she would probably be busy until the end of the convention and gave up hope of being able to shoot this unbelievable Valkyrie As Reimagined By Zach Fischer Cosplay. To my surprise she walked into our room just as we were finishing up for the day. I WAS THRILLED!!

Our next convention is ConnectiCon (Hartford, CT), July 14-17.

I LOVE obscure Cosplays that I haven’t seen before and am unaware that I should even be looking for them! It was hard to chose which image to post as this Fairy Godmother (from Shrek II) nailed every pose. I am so thankful to have met her as we bonded over our love of obscure Cosplays.

Phoenix was truly insane! Cosplay creators had three years since the last convention and wow did they achieve perfection. I followed this stunning Cosplayer before the convention on Instagram and hoped to catch up with her at the Con. My wish was granted and I was floored by the attention to detail. Head to toe, inside and out Ursula vibes that poured from her! To create the Cosplay is one thing, but to also be able to at will bring the character to life by actions is quite another. So impressive on so many levels!

The longer I work on the Cosplay 50 Project the more I notice different types of Cosplayers that come into my studio. I have to imagine it’s a bit intimidating when they walk in to see mountains of photo gear, assistants, and maybe a bit of frenetic energy. The majority of Cosplayers that I photograph are every day people with little modeling experience. Many even admit to me they have never even had a professional photo taken of them before.

This young Freddie Mercury Cosplayer was new to the Cosplay/convention world. He came into my room and nailed the character to a point that we both gasped when we saw the image preview on the back of the camera. These “newbies” never cease to amaze me. It’s like they are coming home to a world they were meant to be in. It is part of the reason that I do this project. I feel the Comic Con world/Cosplay world is inclusive, welcoming, and kind to all who enter; a great place to be in current times.

Love is in the air. I usually post an image that commemorates love on Valentine’s Day: love between a couple, a mother and child, or even a flower that symbolizes love. This year, however, I am posting about the love of an animal, a pet. Specifically, my dog who recently passed away.

I have always had a love of animals. At one time I had twelve shelter cats and most recently five dogs during the pandemic. My family adopted Champ at a local animal shelter in August of 2019. He was a high energy Siberian Husky Mix. He was also fifteen years old, deaf, partially blind, and arthritic. The sign on his cage read, “Just wants a home to live out the last couple months of his life in”. Two months ended up being two-and-a-half years.

I have had many dogs, but Champ was one of the most special as he had a spirit and will to live that I had yet to witness in my lifetime. He was devoted to me with all his heart from the day we adopted him. He would hike four miles a day with me and followed me around endlessly until his very end. During the pandemic it was as if he saved me: when the world was falling apart, he basked in all the love, attention, and activity that he was getting. He always seemed to have a smile on his face and was so very thankful for the life we had given him.

We knew very little of Champ’s history, so my children and I would make up stories about him to fill in the blanks. He loved the snow, so we knew that he had to have run the Iditarod before he made his way to the lower forty-eight. He would open Christmas presents, something he must have been taught at that children’s hospital he volunteered at. Champ loved getting into to the trash, which was probably his junkyard dog years haunting him. And then there was the pirate ship we were sure at one point he lived on…

Champ also appears in The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs Graying Muzzles 2022 calendar this month. If you have a chance, please check out this amazing organization. Finally, if you happen to cross paths with an older dog in need of a home, please consider it. You won’t regret it!

Happy Birthday to Sean, the best assistant a girl could ever have!!!

Assistant roles are evolving at conventions now…. watch out Sue Wolfe and Rhonda Morris! Sean Montgomery, who has worked with me since 2017, was photographed at Florida Supercon. Avi Ram (Season 2 Skin Wars) needed a model, and Sean jumped at the opportunity. Avi painted him as “Venompool” a combination of Deadpool and Venom. It took only 3 hours to paint! Sean really embraces cosplay culture and took easily to posing for photographs, both for me and for everyone who stopped him for one. It was quite entertaining later in the day when he came back to assist. Thanks so much Sean! You have always been an extreme pleasure to work with, and have helped and put up with a lot of the situations (both good and bad) that con life throws at us! It was so fun to have you in front of the camera for the first time (and hopefully not last).
